
Phillis Wheatley High School is located in an urban community in the Historic 5th Ward of Houston, Texas. Wheatley has a rich history, strong legacy, and powerful alumni. The school was started in 1927. Wheatley High School has many outstanding graduates - i.e. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan; Congressman Mickey Leland; Former Ambassador to the Bahamas, Sydney Williams; County Commissioner El Franco Lee; State Representative Harold Dutton; State Representative Al Edwards.
The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps(JROTC )Program started in 1954 through 1976 as a National Defense Cadet Corps unit, it was reactivated as a JROTC unit in 1987 and in 1994 it was reorganized as the HISD’s 16th JROTC Battalion.
Principal: Mr. David E. Edgerson, the 12th and present principal of Phillis Wheatley. He began his tenure with Wheatley in Mar 2011. He is currently seeking a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Prairie View A&M University.
Senior Army Instructor: CPT (Ret) Earl Smith was assigned to the school since June 2009. His last duty assignment prior to retirement was the Commander of Headquarters Detachment 536th Forward Support Battalion. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and the parachutist badge.
Army Instructor: 1SG (Ret) Smiley Capers was assigned to the Wheatley JROTC Program in July 2004. His last duty assignment prior to retirement was an air defense artillery battery’s First Sergeant at Fort Hood, Texas. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and the parachutist badge.
